At Birdwell Primary School we are committed to British Values and equipping our pupils with the skills they will need to take their place in a multi-cultural, multi-faith community in today’s Britain. We are keen to promote equal opportunity for all regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status.

The four British Values as defined by the Government are:
Democracy
The Rule of Law
Individual Liberty
Mutual Respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Birdwell Primary School approach learning around theses values through our approach to Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural learning in school. Children will learn about these values from our PHSE curriculum, our RE curriculum, whole and class assemblies and community group time.

SPIRITUAL
Pupils develop self esteem and are reflective about their own beliefs and experiences whilst learning about and respecting those of others. They develop positive relationships with others as well as imagination, creativity and curiosity. Pupils develop a sense of worth, their unique potential and an understanding of their own strengths and areas to develop as well as a willingness to achieve. Children are encouraged to develop an appreciation of art, theatre, literature and sport.

MORAL
Pupils develop an understanding of what is right and wrong and of moral conflict. They are able to apply this into their own lives both in and out of school. They understand the consequences of their behaviours and are able to learn from mistakes. Pupils respect others and their differences and the environment around them.

SOCIAL
Pupils acquire an understanding of the responsibilities of being members of families and communities (local, national and global). Children develop empathy and participate in a wide range of activities to develop social skills and be given opportunities to take initiative on wider social issues, and establish ways they can help on an individual, local, national and global scale.

CULTURAL
Pupils understand and appreciate then range of different cultures both within school and further afield. They respect and value the richness of the diverse society in which we live. Children also develop an understanding of Britain’s local, national, European, and global dimensions.
