Sponsored Walk for Stand Up 2 Cancer

We walked for Cancer Research!  On Friday 26th May, we walked for Stand Up 2 Cancer raising some funds for Cancer Research.

Earlier in the month, Mrs Atkinson, who has recently fought her own battle with cancer, and is still part of a clinical trial via Weston Park and the University of Leeds decided to do a Sponsored Walk with her little dog, Shem, clocking up over 72 miles in April for the Stand Up To Cancer fundraiser and raised £1,035.  9 children from Birdwell and 8 children from West Meadows along with Sports Leaders from Birdwell, West Meadows and Horizon walked from Birdwell Primary to West Meadows Primary and back to Birdwell.  They walked in the hot sun, taking refuge in the Birdwell Rec. with ice pops on the way.

Adding to Mrs Atkinson’s April Walk with her dog, money is still coming in, Birdwell raised £300 on the day, with more to still be collected and West Meadows was on £727 with money still being collected, plus what other schools in the Hoyland partnership raised, so some admirable amounts being raised by us.  A HUGE Well Done to everyone taking part and to all sponsors and donators – every penny counts!!

After the walk, we played a few games on Birdwell School field, this was the best part of the afternoon to watch, after the long walk and refreshments, friendships were being forged through sport!
